Hainan has opened four roads for testing self-driving vehicles, marking a milestone in the development of intelligent vehicles in the province.
Stretching 129.2 kilometers combined, the four selected are in Haikou, Sanya, Qionghai and Wenchang. At 88.7 kilometers, the S206 Pulong Line in Wenchang is the longest of its kind in urban China. It is part of the Round Island Tour Road, featuring some of the best sights of Hainan.
Hainan’s Administrative Rules on the Regulation of Road Testing and Demonstration of Intelligent Vehicles (for Trial Implementation), released in August, came into effect on Oct. 1. The guidelines aim to attract companies to conduct road tests, research and development as well as pilot applications of smart vehicles in the province.
Based on the trial road tests, Hainan plans to expand its scope, and eventually build an international testing hub for intelligent vehicles.
