On August 9, the 2020 South China Sea Turtle Release event was held on Fenjiezhou Island in Lingshui. Rescued and recovered, 99 sea turtles, which are categorized as the second class nationally protected wild animals in China, were successfully released into the sea, embarking on a journey "home".

Among these sea turtles, some were confiscated by law enforcement agencies, and some were stranded for rescue because of being accidentally captured. They all have been properly treated and trained by professional organizations to regain the ability to survive in the wild.

Sea turtles are the flagship species among the protected aquatic wild animals in China, which are contemporary with the dinosaurs. As the "protective umbrella species" of the marine ecosystem, sea turtles are of great importance to the ocean's material circulation and energy flow, and are vital to the health and stability of key habitats such as coral reefs and seagrass beds.

There are 7 species of sea turtles in the world, of which 5 are distributed in the seas of China. The South China Sea is an important habitat for sea turtles. Now, the living conditions of sea turtles around the world are not optimistic due to factors such as ocean pollution, overexploitation of coasts and bycatch events.

It is reported that 10 out of 99 sea turtles released this time have been selected to be tracked. By tracking the migration path of the sea turtles, researchers can understand the living habits and habitat ecological environment of sea turtles, and accumulate more scientific research data, so as to better carry out sea turtle protection work.
