Recently, a paper published in the international renowned academic journal Phytotaxa announced that a new species of fern, Ceratopteris shingii (Pteridaceae) was discovered in the Haikou Yangshan Wetland, and the abundant ferns in Hainan have attracted much attention again.

According to Yan Yuehong, a researcher from Shanghai Chenshan Plant Science Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, even the Cyathea spinulosa, known as the "King of Ferns" which is extremely picky about the environment can survive in Hainan, which showcased the diversity of local ferns.

In the book "Ferns in Hainan" he wrote in 2018, a total of 506 species of ferns belonging to 34 families and 122 genera in Hainan are included, accounting for 22.29% of the total number of ferns and nearly 70% of the total number of genera in China.

In recent years, Yan Yuehong has sorted out 36 species of ferns endemic to Hainan, including Deparia hainanensis, Diplazium basahense, Lastreopsis subrecedens, Lepisorus affinis Ching, and Hicriopteris simulans Ching. Among them, there are 18 species of endemic ferns named after Hainan's place names.

"To this day, there are dozens of species of ferns in Hainan that have been recorded without new collections. Some species with different identification opinions can only be treated as suspected species for the time being," said Yan Yuehong, who is looking forward to exploring the world of ferns in Hainan and making them known to the public.
