On June 27, in Hainan Boao Lecheng Medical Pilot Zone, Boao Super Hospital performed  specially licensed corneal transplantations for two patients who accidentally lost their sight due to chemical burns. At present, the two patients have regained their sight and can get out of bed and walk about without assistance.

Professor Chen Wei from the Center of Ophthalmology and Optometry at Hainan Boao Super Hospital told reporters that both patients were completely blind due to severe chemical injuries, and normal human corneal transplantation alone could not allow these patients to successfully recover their sight. For patients with such complex conditions, only a specially licensed, imported Boston type II artificial cornea prosthesis, combined with a human cornea transplanted together could be used to effectively treat these patients.

Movingly, the human corneas used in these two operations were both from an elderly American man named John Swanson who passed away recently. In 2009, John Swanson and his wife Ms. Chen Yana (a Chinese American) came to Hainan and then settled in Sanya. In 2017, John Swanson fell accidentally and was afterwards in poor health, and subsequently moved to a senior care center in Haikou. Out of love for China, John Swanson signed a Voluntary Cornea Donation Letter through the Chinese Red Cross Society of Sanya.

On June 20, 2020, John Swanson unfortunately passed away due to illness. Following his last wishes, the staff of the Chinese Red Cross Society of Hainan Province assisted his family in donating his corneas to two blind patients from Sichuan and Henan.

After learning that the cornea received by his father was a donation from an elderly American man, the son of the Sichuan patient Mr. Zhao said: "I think my father is very lucky that there was such a kind person who was willing to give this light, or you could even say, the hope of life to my father and even my entire family at the end of his life. On behalf of the whole family, I would like to thank him for his great love, and we will also dedicate more of our love to society in the future."
