In early spring, the bee eater, known as "the most beautiful bird in China", had flew to Haikou once again and was about to breed on the west coast. On March 24, more than 30 bird enthusiasts and the staff from non-profit organizations and government departments carried out an operation to clean the nests that were built last year and create a better habitat for the bee eaters in the lower reaches of the Wuyuan River.

A week ago, the staff of Haikou Duotan Wetland Research Institute monitored that more than 20 bee eaters had arrived at the Wuyuan River National Wetland Park for nesting and breeding. The weeds and saplings grew on the soil precipice where bee eaters nested last year, which is not good for the birds to inhabit.

At 9 am on March 24, a team of over 30 people, including the staff of Xiuying District Agriculture and Forestry Bureau, Xiuying District Wetland Protection and Management Center, Haikou Wetland Protection and Management Center, volunteers recruited by Haikou Duotan Wetland Research Institute and bird enthusiasts, gathered in Wuyuan River National Wetland Park and walked towards the bee eaters conservation area on foot.

According to Cai Ting from Haikou Duotan Wetland Research Institute, it is very difficult for bee eaters to build their nests. The couple bee eaters take turns to peck the soil precipice with their long mouths to create a suitable nest which is two meters deep with a small hole. What the staff and volunteers have done is to help bee eaters return to where they built the nests last year to create a safer and more comfortable habitat.

From 2010 to 2018, bee eaters always came to breed in pairs on time in late March on the western coast of Haikou, which has become one of the largest breeding places for bee eaters in Hainan. The bee eater is a beneficial, economically important and scientifically valuable terrestrial wild animal protected by the state.
